High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) is a modified thermoplastic renowned for its outstanding impact resistance, superior processability, and stable dimensional performance. Unlike general-purpose polystyrene, it is reinforced with rubber modifiers to enhance toughness while retaining excellent formability, electrical insulation, and cost efficiency. 1. Mechanical Properties (Most Outstanding)

(1) High Impact Resistance: Impact strength is 4–7 times that of general-purpose polystyrene (GPPS), offering excellent toughness.
(2) Elongation at Break: 15%–75% (compared to only about 2% for ordinary PS).
Moderate Strength: Tensile strength of 13.8–41.4 MPa, and flexural strength of 13.8–55.1 MPa.

2. Processing & Physical Properties

(1) Easy to Process: Good fluidity, suitable for injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and thermoforming.
(2) Low Moisture Absorption: Water absorption rate is < 0.1%, typically no pre-drying required before processing.
(3) Dimensional Stability: Low mold shrinkage (0.02%–0.06%).
(5) Easy to Color: Good surface gloss and excellent dyeability.
(6) Electrical Insulation: Excellent insulating properties.

3. Thermal & Chemical Properties

(1) Moderate Heat Resistance: Heat deflection temperature of 70–96°C, Vicat softening point of 84–100°C.
(2) Chemical Resistance: Resists water, weak acids, and weak alkalis; not resistant to organic solvents (benzene, toluene, esters, etc.).
(3) Weather Resistance: Prone to aging and yellowing; requires modification for outdoor use.

High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) is a thermoplastic resin modified from polystyrene and elastomers (such as polybutadiene rubber). It offers good impact resistance, processability, and cost advantages. Its main applications are as follows:

(1) Packaging Materials: The single largest use for HIPS is in food packaging and disposable products, accounting for over 30% of global consumption. Common products include vending machine cups, portion cups, lids, plates, bowls, and bottle caps.

(2) Household Appliance Housings: Used for casings of televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and audio equipment. It is the second most common shell material after ABS.

(3) Toys and Entertainment Products: Widely used in manufacturing toys and recreational equipment due to its ease of processing, non-toxicity, and odorless nature (when meeting safety standards).

(4) Office and Electronic Equipment: Used in telephones, copiers, small instruments, cassette tape cases, and computer peripheral components.

(5) Construction and Decorative Materials: Can be used for sheets, plates, drainage pipes, architectural decorative parts. Low-foam HIPS can even be processed like wood, allowing for sawing, planing, and nailing.
