PLA stands for polylactic acid, a novel bio-based biodegradable material produced from renewable plant resources such as maize, cassava, and sugarcane. These resources undergo microbial fermentation to yield lactic acid, which is then chemically polymerised. The ester bonds within the polylactic acid molecule enable natural degradation under specific conditions, ultimately converting into carbon dioxide and water. This entire process requires only 3 to 6 months, significantly shorter than the century-long degradation cycle of traditional petrochemical plastics.
